Black & White and Color Abstract Film Photography
This small collection of abstract film photography images has been steadily growing over the years and remains a central theme in my work.
When I first approached photography, I never truly understood the point of abstract work like Weston’s peppers. With a little more experience, I realize now the abstract film photography often requires real stillness from the photographer, a kind of quietness of the soul to really allow the subject, be it an object or a place, to emerge into the photograph. Once abstracted from their circumstance through image making, these pictures become powerful totems for me, strangely surreal but very familiar at the same time.
The color images in this collection were not altered through digital enhancement but were shot on film that renders colors differently than one might expect. I do give the scans a slight digital tweak in post processing, but not too much, lest it become a “digital” image, which would be to miss the point.
If you look with the right kind of eyes, you can sometimes reveal the magic contained in everyday objects. That can be an astonishingly simple and beautiful thing.
