    Documentary & Candid Black & White Film Photography

Black and white street photography is a great teacher. The student learns from error, missed opportunity, bitter experience and happy accident. Getting back into photography after a long hiatus, I committed to shooting black and white film for a year, to “get my eye in.” It’s been more than a decade, and I see no reason to drop the habit. I roll my own film canisters from 100-foot rolls and develop and print at home.

The street is also a great teacher, especially for the eye. Class is in session every day, and the teacher never tires. Black and white film photography imposes gentle limits that reduce moments to their essence. When these moments find you, they become signs, portents, mysterious symbols from dreams. These are a few that found me.
